Singapore, May 10 (UITV)- Murali Pillai, an Indian-origin lawyer from Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) who was elected Member of Parliament following his victory in a by-election on Saturday, was sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP) on Monday afternoon in the Singapore parliament.

Mr. Murali had won the Bukit Batok by-election with 61.2 percent of the votes on Saturday night. His opponent from the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), Dr Chee Soon Jaun, garnered 38.8 percent of votes in a one-on- one for a single member ward.

The by-election was called after former MP David Ong resigned in March over an alleged extra-marital affair with a PAP grassroots activist. The 48-year- old joins the PAP’s other 82 MPs in Parliament. The remaining six seats are occupied by the Worker’s Party.

“I hope to learn quickly from fellow PAP MPs and I want to start contributing actively,” Mr Murali had told reporters on Sunday after going around Bukit Batok to thanks residents for their support.

He is the first PAP candidate to win a by-election in a single seat in over three decades. Mr. Murali victory comes just eight months after his first electoral contest in the 2015 General Election. Back then he narrowly lost by a margin of 2 percentage points challenging the incumbent Worker’s Party in Alijunied GRC.
