Curfew imposed in New York City to curb violent protests

New York, June 2 (UITV/IANS)- A curfew has been imposed in New York City in an effort to curb violent protests over the death of African-American man George Floyd, according to a joint statement by Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo.

The curfew began at 11 p.m. Monday, and will continue till 5 a.m. Tuesday, Xinhua news agency quoted the statement as saying.

"While we encourage people to protest peacefully and make their voices heard, the safety of the general public is paramount and cannot be compromised," Cuomo said in the statement.

Chennai, June 2 (UiTV/IANS) - Former state president of the Tamil Nadu BJP K. N.Lakshmanan passed away at his residence in Salem.

A former member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Lakhsmanan was 90 years old and died due to age related ailments on Monday night.

According to family members, Lakshmanan was admitted to a hospital recently and was discharged later.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.

Kabul, June 2 (UITV/IANS)- Afghan President Ashraf Ghani spoke with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo via video conference and discussed the Afghan peace process, a government official said.

According to the presidential spokesman Sediq Sediqqi, in the video conference on Monday Ghani and Pompeo also discussed the next steps towards peace, including the release of prisoners, the analysis and location of negotiations, and other peace-related measures, reports TOLO News.

Both sides emphasized the need for joint cooperation on reporting during the peace negotiations, Sediqqi said.

“People of Indian origin overseas are an energetic and powerful community and it is appreciated that they came forward to help their Indian brothers and sisters with food, shelter, counselling and in several other ways,” he said at a webinar dialogue on economic engagement between India and its diaspora arranged by the PIO Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Seoul, May 29 (UITV/IANS) South Korea's government tightened up school quarantine and distancing rules on Friday as the novel coronavirus transmission in the greater Seoul area shows no signs of slowing.

In a precautionary move to stem community transmission, the Education Mnistry said it plans to limit the number of students at schools in the capital area, reports Yonhap News Agency.
